The Power of the Pause
In our go, go world, where work harder faster was a way to get promoted, a sign of honor, achievement or superwomen. Yet, seldom was the cost ever considered. Achievement and drive were thought to be the priority. Take a pause or slow down, was a no, no.
In the past, a pause was considered unproductive. Things have started to change. Studies have shown the value of a pause goes well beyond improving productivity, it supports well-being by giving the brain a mini break. The research has shown creativity, new ideas, the ability to respond verses react, and much more become possible.
Times that benefit from the pause to reset, would be when you have been working intensely on a project, after being on zoom meetings. The pause allows a person stop and integrate before re-engaging deeply again. Transition between projects, times of high pressure, stress or conflict are other times that can benefit from the pause.
The Pause becomes a small break for the brain and nervous system to regroup and reset.
When I think of the Power of the Pause, it reminds me of a course I took many years ago where they spoke of “Stop, change, start”. The Power of Pause has been used in sales for years.
Maria Shriver used it back in 2012 when she gave a commencement speech called “The Power of the Pause” where she spoke about the value of pausing before reacting.
There are many ways to create a pause. One of the well-known ones is to breathe. Take a breath, and become aware of the breathe, what are five things that you notice about your breath?
Slowly have a drink of water and notice the water in your mouth and as you swallow.
Look outside and look for something you haven’t seen before.
Find something to appreciate.
These are all a few ways to reset and respond verses react. You could also ask “what am I giving voice to, am I using it to give hope, inspire or to threaten or shame?
Next time practising the pause, allow a state of wonder and curiosity to guide you. I wonder what new choices and responses appear as you navigate life’s challenges and ongoing changes.
I would love to learn how you will incorporate the power of the pause into your world.
